Petra is the vast Nabataean rock-cut city beside Umm Sayhoun in southern Jordan, with its main visitor approach from nearby Wadi Musa. Once a major caravan crossroads and the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, it combines monumental tomb façades, temples, channels and later Roman-era remains across a landscape of sandstone cliffs and wadis. The narrow Siq creates a dramatic transition to Al-Khazneh, while elevated routes reveal the Royal Tombs, theatre and broad valley at a scale unseen from ground level. Petra’s stone shifts from pale gold to rose, red and purple as light moves across its layered surfaces; deep shade in the gorges contrasts sharply with sunlit façades. The site is a protected archaeological park, and visitors should remain on established routes and respect barriers around fragile structures.
