Albert Cuypmarkt
📍 Netherlands
Albert Cuypmarkt is the open-air street market along Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp, the densely built neighborhood south of Amsterdam’s historic center. Established in 1905, it remains part of everyday neighborhood life, with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, clothing, and household goods. Both the street and market take their name from Albert Cuyp, the 17th-century Dutch painter known for his landscapes. Dutch market foods such as herring and freshly made stroopwafels sit alongside an international food scene reflecting De Pijp’s diverse communities. Visually, the market is defined by its long corridor of awnings, closely packed displays, and shoppers, framed by the brick upper stories of the surrounding buildings—a layered streetscape where daily commerce takes precedence over monumental architecture.
