Al Safliya Island, located in the bay of Doha, Qatar, is a small island of around 210 hectares. It is surrounded by wide beaches and mangroves. With the sea breeze, it's an idyllic spot to take stroll on the shoreline or take a picnic in the sun. The island also houses the ruins of a very old fortress, which was once a pearl trading post. It was also used as a base for pearling boats, as well as a coastal defense point against incursions from other countries. Al Safliya Island is also famous for its diverse array of birds, and may provide a pleasant surprise for bird-watchers. The island is accessible from Doha by boat, with tours offering a chance to explore the ruins and the surrounding beaches.
