Al-Azhar Mosque stands in Islamic Cairo, a short distance north of El Sayeda Zeinab and opposite the historic Khan el-Khalili quarter. Founded in the 10th century under the Fatimids, it became the heart of Al-Azhar’s enduring tradition of Islamic scholarship. Centuries of additions have created a layered architectural ensemble: a bright marble courtyard framed by arcades, finely carved stucco, and minarets from different periods rising above the dense city. The courtyard’s symmetry and pale surfaces are especially distinctive, while the surrounding lanes provide striking contrasts between monumental stonework and everyday Cairo street life. As Al-Azhar remains an active mosque and place of study, visitors should dress modestly, remove shoes before entering prayer areas, and photograph worshippers only with permission.
