The Giza Pyramids rise on the Giza Plateau in Al Haram, at the western edge of Greater Cairo, where the city meets the desert. Built during Egypt’s Old Kingdom as royal funerary complexes, the site is dominated by the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, with the Great Sphinx and smaller tombs nearby. Khufu’s Great Pyramid is the only surviving monument of the ancient Seven Wonders. From many angles Khafre’s pyramid appears tallest because it stands on higher ground and retains part of its smooth limestone casing near the summit. Strong geometry, weathered stone textures, shifting desert light, and the contrast between monumental ruins and Cairo’s urban skyline define the site visually. Visitors must remain within designated areas, and climbing the pyramids is prohibited.
