Acoma Pueblo sits atop a broad sandstone mesa in western New Mexico, the historic pueblo community often called "Sky City" and long inhabited by Acoma people. Architecturally it reads as layered adobe terraces and low, whitewashed walls that follow the mesa’s contours; narrow alleys, wooden vigas and worn plaster reveal generations of repair and daily life. The visual interest comes from the interplay of rounded earthen forms and strong southwestern light—long shadows and textured surfaces at sunrise and sunset accentuate relief, while rim viewpoints frame a big, spare horizon of prairie and distant mesas.
