The Great Sphinx stands on the Giza Plateau in Al Haram, beside the pyramid complex of Khafre and within sight of the three principal pyramids. Carved from the plateau’s limestone during Egypt’s Old Kingdom, it combines a lion’s body with a royal human head and is closely associated with Pharaoh Khafre. Its weathered surface, missing nose, monumental paws, and east-facing profile make it one of ancient Egypt’s most recognizable forms. From the designated viewing areas, photographs can frame the Sphinx against Khafre’s pyramid or emphasize the contrast between its eroded stone and the precise geometry of the surrounding monuments. Direct access to the sculpture is restricted to protect the site.
