The Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre is an impressive Romanesque-style Benedictine Abbey located in Auxerre, France. Founded in the 6th-century, the Abbey served as a major center of learning and exerted important influence culturally as well as politically. The main structure of the Abbey includes several abbatiales churches and chapels, the seigniorial palace and a cloister. The cloister is possibly the best reflection of the Romanesque style, while its seigniorial palace demonstrates the influences of Gothic architecture. Other architectural features include the Corbillard chapel, the Ladvocat chapel, the chapels in the east and west wings and the cloister. Apart from the stunning architecture, visitors can appreciate the many works of art which are displayed in the Abbey. The Abbey also hosts several tourist events throughout the year. Unfortunately, due to the restoration work, the Abbey is often closed to the public. Visitors should check in advance if the Abbey is open before visiting.
