The Abbazia di Silvacane, in La Roque-d'Anthéron, France, is a stunning Cistercian abbey located in a picturesque valley of olive groves, vineyards and sunflower fields. Founded in 1140, the abbey was an important religious site until its suppression in 1791. It is currently a private property and while it's not open to the public, visitors can explore the grounds and take in the magnificent architecture. The graceful Romanesque church, with its beautiful columns and arches, is a highlight of the complex. The cloisters, the abbey’s main buildings, still features iconic barred windows and several Romanesque murals. Despite the declining state of the estates, visitors can still enjoy strolling the gardens and marvel at the surrounding landscape. Abbazia de Silvacane is a must-see for any student of European religious architecture.
