The Abbazia di Santa Maria Assunta is a beautiful historic abbey nestled in the Tuscan hills in the town of Colle di Val d'Elsa. It was built around the second half of the ninth century by a Benedictine monk, and has been expanded and reconstructed many times over the years. Visitors can admire the numerous frescoes, sculptures, and mosaics that adorn the abbey’s walls and ceilings. Inside, visitors will find numerous chapels, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with its six elegant columns that support the arches. Outside, a picturesque little cemetery surrounds the abbey, making for a great walking trail. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes, as you’ll want to explore around the abbey.
