The Abbey of Saints Ruffino and Vitale stands in the rural hamlet of San Ruffino, near Amandola in the Marche foothills of the Sibillini Mountains. Dating to the medieval period, the former Benedictine complex is distinguished by its restrained Romanesque character: sturdy local-stone walls, rounded apses, a square bell tower and a raised presbytery above the crypt. Surviving frescoes add color and human detail to the otherwise austere interior. Outside, the warm, irregular masonry contrasts with wooded slopes and open fields, while the nearby Lake San Ruffino broadens the landscape and reinforces the abbey’s secluded setting.
