📍 From East Side, France
The Abbaye Saint Philibert in Tournus is one of France's most beautiful Romanesque abbeys. Built between 975 and 1030, this abbey was a major part of the Benedictine Order, providing a haven for religious life in the region. Its round chapel, crypt and cloisters, along with the surrounding gardens, are an impressive sight to behold. The basilica itself is one of the largest churches in Europe, while the gates provide a majestic entrance to this sanctuary. The carvings and sculptures on the walls and columns are particularly impressive, and the intricate stained glass windows pay tribute to the Romanesque style and its influence on the area. Visitors can still experience the spiritual atmosphere of the abbey during its regular mass services, but the building is also open for tourism purposes, with guided tours and other events taking place throughout the year.
