The Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud and its Courtyard in Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, France is a place steeped in history and culture. Founded in 1101 by the Count of Anjou, it was once one of the largest monasteries in Europe, thriving for over 800 years. Today, it still contains much of the grand architectural and sculptural works which were built throughout the centuries, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include old manuscripts preserved in the library, the beautiful refectory and the towering spire of the abbey church. The former dormitories and priory have been transformed into a hotel, and visitors can also enjoy visits of the abbey courtyards and cemeteries, along with regular exhibitions.
