📍 From Courtyard, France
Abbaye de Fontfroide is a former Cistercian monastery in a wooded valley southwest of Narbonne, on the edge of the Corbières hills. Founded in 1093, it joined the Cistercian order in 1145 and became an influential religious centre in medieval Languedoc. Its Romanesque church reflects the order’s architectural restraint, while the cloister combines paired columns and rounded arches with later Gothic vaulting. The repeated arcades frame a planted courtyard, creating a distinctive rhythm of warm stone, sunlight and deep shade. Artist and collector Gustave Fayet and his wife Madeleine acquired the abbey in 1908 and began its restoration; the colourful stained glass marks this later artistic revival. Terraced gardens and a rose garden extend the setting beyond the monastic buildings, contrasting cultivated spaces with the surrounding Mediterranean vegetation.
