Aasleagh Falls is a broad, low cascade on the River Erriff near Leenane, in County Mayo and close to the head of Killary Harbour. Rather than a single high drop, the river breaks across dark, stepped rock, creating bands of white water framed by the rugged hills of Connemara and southwest Mayo. The flow changes markedly with rainfall, from clearly defined channels to a powerful sheet of water, while the river is also associated with Atlantic salmon. The falls are familiar from scenes in the 1990 film The Field, which used several locations around Leenane. From the roadside area, the strongest compositions emphasize the horizontal cascade, textured rock and open mountain backdrop.
