
Plaça de la Independència is a small and charming square located in the heart of Girona, the capital of the historic province of Girona, in northeastern Spain. It is surrounded by a grid of narrow cobblestone streets, which make this area one of the most charming in the city. The square itself is bordered by the Gothic Gothic Episcopal Palace Nowadays it is a unique place to walk around and enjoy the old buildings that still stand. In the middle stands the Monument to Independence, which commemorates the signing of the Pact of Union of Aragon and Catalonia in 1137 that was presided by Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona. Other sights in this area include the Baroque-style Church of Sant Domènec and the neoclassical University of Girona.
