It was built by Richard the Lionheart, also known as Richard I of England, as part of his effort to solidify English dominion over continental Europe. The castle lies on the bank of the Seine, high above the valley and is renowned for its strategic importance in the region. It is built on two levels, the higher of which consists of a large, open courtyard surrounded by curtain walls, watchtowers, and buildings of various sizes.
