Zugspitze

Zugspitze, or the "Zugspitze-Grünstein" is the highest peak of the Bavarian Alps and Germany (2962 m). Located in Grainau, Zugspitze is a popular destination for tourists, mountaineers and climbers.

The mountain is composed of limestone and quartzite and is covered in snow for more than half the year. It can be reached via the Zugspitzbahn from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is the highest train route in Germany (the journey takes almost an hour). The summit offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks of the Bavarian Alps, the Austrian Tyrol and the Wetterstein range. You can also look way down into the plain of Bavaria and Austria. There's even a viewing platform, the Neue Schneide, which is considered one of the best viewing points in Germany. At the peak of Zugspitze, there are several buildings, including an annual ski area, huts, restaurants and the AlpspiX viewing platform, which is accessible to anyone willing to explore the mountain. At the base of the mountain, tourism flourishes due to many attractions and leisure activities in Grainau, which includes the variety of ski resorts scattered throughout the area. There are many biking, mountaineering and ski schools to learn from, in addition to a wide selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to wind down and relax after a day on the slopes. For those looking for something a little less strenuous, you can also explore the trails of Eibsee's lake or embark on a gentle hike on the Partnach Gorge.
