Temple of Apollo

The Temple of Apollo in Selcuk, Türkiye is a breathtaking remnant of the once-great ancient Greek Empire. The temple was built in the 4th century BC as a memorial to a great battle between the Greeks and the Persians. It is important as the most significant and well-preserved temple of the Hellenic-period in Asia Minor. The temple stands on high ground with views of the Gulf of Izmir, and is surrounded by a huge wall, with four Ionic colonnades depicting stories of mythological events. Partial restoration in the 19th century revealed much of the temple structure, revealing the elevated podium, anta capitals, roof tiles, and decorative marble panels. The imposing columns and ancient walls are an impressive sight. Visitors can also explore the nearby museum and archeological site.
