📍 Z Notre-Dame d'Afrique, Algeria
The Monument to Charles Lavigerie is in the Bologhine district of Algeria. It is a 20-meter tall monument created by sculptor Jules-Felix Coutan and completed in 1902. It commemorates the life and work of Charles Lavigerie, a Cardinal and missionary who sought to spread Christianity across Africa. The Monument to Charles Lavigerie is seen as a symbol of French colonial rule and was heavily damaged during the Algerian War of Independence. Although it was repaired and restored to its original state in 2006, the Monument to Charles Lavigerie continues to remind us of the French presence in colonial Algeria. The monument is an excellent example of Beaux-Arts architecture, with an impressive façade featuring allegorical figures and a large fountain in the center. For many visitors, the Monument to Charles Lavigerie is a powerful symbol of the colonial period, and a reminder to never forget the past.
