Rocca di Staggia

Rocca di Staggia is a historic fortress in Staggia, Italy, built during the 9th Century to protect Tuscany from the potential barbarian invasions. Constructed by the powerful Lucca family, it was an important strategic point and late became one of the strongholds of the Republic of Florence in the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the Staggia fortress was partly demolished as part of the defensive system of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Today, soldiers of the Italian Army keep guard over the fortress. The fort, surrounded by remarkable forests and greenery, can be visited on foot. During the hike, visitors can explore and observe the picturesque inner courtyard and ancient walls covered with ivy.
