📍 France
Château Gaillard is a 12th century castle located in Les Andelys, France. It was built by Richard the Lionheart, also known as Richard I of England, as part of his effort to solidify English dominion over continental Europe. The castle lies on the bank of the Seine, high above the valley and is renowned for its strategic importance in the region. It is built on two levels, the higher of which consists of a large, open courtyard surrounded by curtain walls, watchtowers, and buildings of various sizes. The lower level is formed by a series of defense mechanisms facing different directions. Today, the castle is well-preserved, offering visitors a unique view of medieval architecture and landscape. The surrounding countryside is dotted with vineyards, forests and fortresses, making it a great destination for sightseeing and exploring.
