The city of Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan is a relative newcomer to the region, with a modern history that dates back to the early 1960s. It is home to two universities, over 30 research institutes and a number of major tech companies. Tsukuba Science City is a planned new town consisting of eight districts: Tsukuba Expo Center, Tsukuba Central, Kisarazu and Oyama, Jyoka, Aeon Mall, Hokaze-no-Mi and Lake Kasumigaura. It is home to a vast array of both natural and man-made attractions. Popular outdoor activities include cycling around Mount Tsukuba, hiking trails, hot springs, museums and Tsukuba Circuit, Japan’s premier car-racing facility. As for sights, the expo center, central business district, Sakura tsukuba Botanical Garden, Tsukuba Space Center and the Akiyoshida Cave make for interesting day trips. The night view of Tsukuba is splendid and one of the most beautiful in Kanto region.
