The Cathedral of the Assumption (also known as the Rotunda of Mosta) is a 19th century church in the town of Ir-Rabat Għawdex, Malta. The building was completed in 1853 and consecrated as the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its fame mainly comes from the fact that during the Second World War, a German incendiary bomb passed through the dome, but failed to explode. The incident was seen as a miracle and the church became known as the "Miracle of Mosta". The building is a classic example of late Neoclassical design and it dominates the skyline of Mosta. The interior is decorated with frescoes and marble decorations, while the external facade features a massive Corinthian order portico on its east-facing arm, which is its most distinctive feature. Visitors to the church can also expect to see several works of art by prominent Maltese artists. Taking a tour of the Cathedral of the Assumption is a must for every visitor to Ir-Rabat Għawdex.
