Castle of Terena

The Castle of Terena is a Portuguese castle in the Municipality of Évora, in the District of Évora. Built in the 13th century as a residence for the Bishop of Évora, it was also a fortress to protect the population of the town. The castle has a square plan with four cylindrical towers at the corners and is surrounded by a curtain wall. Inside the walls, there is a 15th century Gothic chapel and a Baroque palace. Today, the castle is a cultural center where some artistic works are carried out and it is open to the public. From the top of the towers, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Évora, which is a World Heritage city. The castle can be reached by a 20 minute walk from the centre of Évora.
