Castle of Marvão

The Castle of Marvão is one of the most impressive fortifications in Portugal. It stands atop a high granite peak, offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The castle, which dates back to the 12th century, was built as a fortress to protect its citizens from invading forces. Inside the castle walls, one can still explore the ruins of an old Islamic-style palace. There are also two churches that are worth a visit; the Church of Our Lady of the Castle and the Chapel of St. Thomas of Canterbury. The castle also boasts an extensive and well-maintained network of tunnels and passages. Visitors can explore the tunnels, discovering one secret after another. Outside the castle, the town of Marvão is full of old cobblestone streets, stone buildings, churches and chapels, making it a photographer's delight.
