Verbindungskanal is a man-made artificial waterway canal system in Mannheim, Germany. It was built in the 18th century as a connection between the city's two western suburban districts, Rheinau and Waldhof. The canal serves two purposes: first, it was the main source of water for Mannheim before the establishment of the modern water supply and sanitation system; second, to facilitate transportation, now mainly for leisure and sports. The Verbindungskanal is a great spot for walkers, runners and cyclists. The northern shore offers a view of the city having a large array of sailing and fishing boats. Guided tours are available to explore the canal and its landscape. Nearby you can find a boatyard and the Reinau lock, an automated lock that controls the canal's water level. There are also some parks and nature reserves nearby.
