The ancient city of Petra, in southern Jordan, is one of the world's most spectacular archaeological sites. It sits amongst stunning mountains and rugged canyons, giving visitors an awe-inspiring view. Petra was carved out by the ancient Nabataeans in the 3rd century B.C. and is known for its massive, intricately carved monuments, temples, tombs, and monuments. The most iconic of them all is the Treasury, which is carved into the side of a mountain. On the way up to the Treasury you can take in breathtaking views of the rugged Jordanian countryside. Other well-known monuments include the Royal Tombs, the Great Temple and the Street of Facades. Petra was declared a World Heritage site in 1985 and is now a major touristic destination for travelers from all over the world.
