Maison Carrée in Nîmes is a stunning example of Roman architecture from the 1st century AD. Located in the small city of Nîmes in southern France, this monument, with its Corinthian columns, is one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world. It was built by Emperor Augustus in honor of his adopted son, Drusus, in 16 BC and served as a temple of Augustus and his adoptive daughter, Julia. Today, the site is part of the ancient city of Nimes, including a large theater and amphitheater as well as other monuments from the Roman era. The Maison Carée is an important part of the city’s history and has become a symbol of Nîmes. Although the site is open to the public, access is limited, so it is best to book a ticket in advance. The interior of the temple is not accessible, but the beautiful exterior is fully visible. Be sure to explore the stones and walls which are inscribed with Latin letters, offering several signs of Roman life.
