The Basilica di Sant'Andrea in Mantova, Italy is a magnificent late Romanesque church built between 1230-1330. It features a cruciform plan, with a tall central tower flanked by four flying buttresses, an external rose window and terracotta decorative elements. Inside, the luminous interior stands out thanks to its clean Renaissance lines, with tall slender pillars and Corinthian capitals. The highlight of the basilica is its elaborate fresco cycle, finished by the Lombard master Andrea Mantegna between 1462-1474. The vibrant cycle, which tells the story of Genesis, is considered to be one of Mantegna's masterpieces. The basilica also houses a number of other works of art, including a wooden crucifix attributed to Donatello and a magnificent theater, where various performances and ceremonies still take place today.
