Schokkerbos is located in Schokland, an ancient island located in the Noordoostpolder province in the Netherlands. It is one of the few remaining pieces of land from an actual island which is often referred to as a ‘fossil island’. The island, surrounded by canals and marshes, is home to much wildlife and scenic views. The Schokkerbos is what Rembrandt van Rijn used to create his famous drawings and paintings of the Dutch countryside. It still looks much the same as it did in his day. A boardwalk circles the island, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the stark beauty of the Schokkerbos. The area is a nature lover’s paradise, and photography is allowed with prior permission. Visitors should dress accordingly as the weather can be unpredictable. Guided tours are also available.
