San Lorenzo de Picuris Church

San Lorenzo de Picuris Church (also known as the Virgen de los Dolores Church) is located in Peñasco, New Mexico and is believed to be the oldest mission church in the United States. This adobe church is believed to have been built between 1568 and 1620 by the Taos Indians. The church was constructed mostly by hand, using local resources and is a good example of traditional adobe churches. The interior has a large central arch and several small domes. The fresco-covered exterior is painted in characteristic Hispanic designs. This historic church is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Peñasco and its surrounding areas.
