The Scallop at Aldeburgh Beach is a striking sculpture designed by Maggi Hambling in 2003. It is located on the pebbled beach in Aldeburgh, England, with stunning views of the North Sea. The sculpture is made of stainless steel and stands 4 meters tall and 3.5 meters wide. It represents a tribute to the composer Benjamin Britten, who spent much of his life in Aldeburgh. The words “I hear those voices that will not be drowned” are inscribed on the piece, referencing Britten's opera “Peter Grimes.” The area around the sculpture is perfect for a leisurely walk or picnic, while taking in the beautiful coastal views. It is a popular spot for photography, especially during sunset. However, visitors should be aware that the beach is not accessible at high tide, so plan accordingly to capture the perfect shot. During the summer months, the Scallop also hosts a range of events, including live music and outdoor performances.
