Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge in southern Peru. It's renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that blend into the rugged landscape, and for its terraced Agriculture and irrigation systems. A key Inca religious and political site, Machu Picchu is what remains of an ancient city thought to have been a royal estate or sacred religious site. Commonly referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America. Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this unique and spectacular archaeological site stands 8,000 feet above sea level within the terraced walls of the Urubamba Valley in the Cusco Region of Peru.
